In 2004, Bob Toll and Toll Brothers saw a unique opportunity to link the names of two undisputed leaders in their respective fields, and Toll Brothers became the corporate sponsor of the longest running classical music series in broadcast history, The Metropolitan Opera International Radio Broadcasts.
Peter Gelb, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, stated, “For opera lovers across the nation and around the world, Toll Brothers has become synonymous with the best of grand opera, thanks to the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network. Every Saturday during opera season, millions of listeners tune in to the live Toll Brothers radio broadcasts of the Met’s matinees to hear opera’s finest singers performing Puccini, Verdi, Wagner, and all the other great opera composers. The Metropolitan Opera and opera fans everywhere are grateful to Toll Brothers for making opera so widely accessible and providing cultural enrichment for all who tune in.”
Reflecting on the ninth year of sponsoring the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network, Bob Toll spoke in an interview recently with Metropolitan Opera radio host, Margaret Juntwait.
MJ: What made you decide to help to make sure the Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts stayed on the air?
BT: I can’t imagine an arts institution that would be better to have an association with. In the whole world, whether it’s government or medicine or art, I just can’t think of a better association than Toll Brothers and the Metropolitan Opera International Radio Broadcasts. There’s no way of quantifying it—and I have no knowledge of the precise impact it has been to the business—but as a grandmother would say, “it wouldn’t hurt.”
MJ: Do you remember when you first heard your company’s name attached to the Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts?
BT: I don’t know whether I was here or at home or at work, but it was a thrill. It makes us very proud to be associated with the Metropolitan Opera. We like it for its charitable purpose. We like it for its cultural purpose. We like it for its business purpose. We’ve gotten tons and tons of mail from around the world thanking us. We’re very proud to be where we are.
