Technology in the Home: New Innovations in Bathroom Renovation

Turning the bathroom into a home spa is not a new concept, but the increasing demand for high tech and green products is driving bathroom advances beyond just super showers. Conservation and sustainability trends combined with advances in technology are creating bathroom fixtures that look more like luxury statement pieces and less like basic necessities.

Toll Brothers’ partner Kohler® is bringing new technology into the bathroom by revolutionizing the way we flush our toilets, transforming the way we light our bathrooms, and changing the way we listen to our music.

The Kohler Touchless™ toilet is true to its name, and is new technology that allows users to flush the toilet without making contact by using an innovative sensor instead of the traditional flush lever.

“The Touchless flush is a great solution to the growing demand for increased hygiene in the bathroom. Homeowners are, of course, worried about the hygiene and health of their family members, and the toilet trip lever is an obvious area of concern. Touchless takes that concern out of the equation, utilizing new technology to provide a touchless way to control the flush,” says Brian Hedlund, marketing manager of Kohler toilets.

Kohler Touchless toilets work in a very simple manner: holding a hand over the tank lid directly above the sensor actuates the flush. The new Touchless technology is available in the iconic Kohler Cimarron® toilet as well as a retro-fit kit that will work with almost any single-flush toilet with a canister or flapper type flush.

In addition to the Touchless toilet, Kohler is also introducing the Kohler Nightlight™ toilet seat. The Nightlight seat helps guide users safely and comfortably, even on the darkest nights, by using two unique LED light displays that illuminate the toilet in a soft glow. It’s perfect for kids, seniors, or anyone who needs to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.

“Typically overhead lights are bright because daytime tasks call for well-lit spaces. But accessing the bathroom at night is a different story,” says Jerry Bougher, marketing manager for Kohler toilet seats. “One of the fastest ways to ruin your chances of getting back to sleep easily is to turn on a harsh, bright overhead light in the bathroom. The Nightlight toilet seat offers a soft, non-disruptive alternative.”

Additionally, the Nightlight seat runs on a seven-hour timer, allowing the light to be on during the night and off during the day when it is not needed. The Nightlight feature is offered on the popular Kohler Cachet® and Reveal® seat models, in both elongated and round front.

While talking about bathroom innovations, we can’t forget about the shower, and neither did Kohler, which is introducing a new product that will bring music directly into the shower via an integrated wireless speaker.

“The Kohler Moxie™ showerhead is the first of its kind to combine the delivery of water and music. And with the proximity of the Bluetooth-enabled wireless speaker, bathers are simultaneously showered with music and a best-in-class spray experience,” says Leslie Bronson, product manager of Kohler performance showering.

The Kohler Moxie showerhead syncs with any Bluetooth-enabled device and streams music directly into the shower. But the fun doesn’t stop there; the speaker pod can be removed for enjoyment on the go, throughout the rest of the bathroom and beyond, offering a convenient, stylish sound boost.
