Inspiring tips for playing with pattern
While some folks love an all-white kitchen, there are those among us who crave color and pattern to make a space sing. Mixing patterns is a simple way to add character and personality. Choose a careful collection of patterns you love and you can’t go wrong. Just be sure to add balance with enough solid tones to let the eye rest.

Take a playful approach
The designer tapped the “power of three” when blending patterns – selecting a primary pattern, a secondary pattern and a plain pattern, and mixing scales to add dimension. Fanciful patterns add intrigue and cheer from walls to floor, enlightened by open shelves and a wall of windows.
Providing a foundation for the energetic wallpaper, Ann Sacks Eastern Promise floor tile in Baltic transforms the uplifting space with the primary pattern – a striking green and blue geometric design. Crisp, simple cabinets in white-painted wood contrast with the bold, modern feel of the graphic tile.
Grove Garden wallpaper by Osborne & Little adds a unique level of personalization as the secondary pattern, with whimsical hummingbirds rendered in bright pastels. We can almost imagine that the graceful pink birds flew in through the wall of windows. Don’t be afraid to choose a pattern as original as this one to convey your personal sense of panache.
Behind the range, Ann Sacks Idris tile in Celadon contributes the plain pattern. The handmade, hand-glazed geometric tile is softened by its natural imperfections, adding texture and authenticity.
Balance the pattern with neutral solids
With such a vibrant blend of patterns, it’s vital to provide plenty of neutral areas to anchor the space. In this kitchen, clean white cabinetry and rich walnut countertops provide welcome places for the eye to rest while keeping the mood casual. The window mullions, painted in the same Celadon as the wallpaper, lend another simple pattern without competing with the colorful floor and walls.
Colored sinks offer another way to make a personal statement. Two KOHLER® sinks in soft, earthy Sandbar let multiple cooks collaborate on culinary adventures without getting in each other’s way. The Whitehaven apron-front sink lends the space a vintage farmhouse feel with unpretentious style. The under-mounted Riverby sink comes with hardworking accessories – custom-fit colander and cutting board, utility rack with soaking cup and stainless-steel bottom basin rack – that make prep and cleanup faster. The bold size, solid heft and dark bronze finish of the Bellera faucet add depth and presence to the whimsical pastel scheme.
Tap into your personality for one-of-a-kind style
A memorable space is one that springs from your natural style. The room will come to life when you choose patterns, colors and decorative elements that make your own personal statement.
