Toll Brothers’ vendor partner Progress Lighting, the largest single source
for residential and commercial lighting, contributed to this story.
Whether you’re buying a new home, selling your current one, or simply refreshing your existing space, lighting plays an important role in completing your home’s intended style. Our friends at Progress Lighting always say “lighting is the jewelry of the home,” meaning it’s possible to significantly upgrade the perceived value of your residence through small changes such as installing beautiful new light fixtures.
Since lighting is a key factor in differentiating one home from the next, staying up-to-date on the latest home fashions helps you select fixtures that will beautify your home for years to come. While home décor trends don’t go in and out as quickly as the latest fashion accessories – there are many lighting looks that Progress Lighting has identified that characterize today’s most stylish, designer-friendly interior settings.
Handcrafted elements add authenticity to kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and even home offices. A popular design trend is to combine recycled materials and vintage accents with modern undertones for a fresh, new design. This trend translates to lighting with fixtures that showcase painted finishes, antique mirrored glass, modernized scrollwork, or hand-bent arching forms.
Larger homes featuring upscale style preferences often require oversized fixtures to fill extended vertical or horizontal spaces. Doris Pearlman, founder of Possibilities for Design, Inc., masters the art of spatial design by incorporating grand lighting fixtures in Toll Brothers’ model homes. Here she capitalizes on the spectacular form of Progress Lighting’s Cantata chandelier to create an eye-catching display in the great room.
Back in Brass
Warmer metals are all over residential interiors and this trend is expected to continue to gain momentum in the New Year. Whether it’s in appliances, hardware, or light fixtures, bronze, brass, and gold tones are taking center stage. Not only are finishes “heating up,” but the use of mixed metals is also gaining in popularity. Gone are the days where one finish characterizes the entire house, or even a single room – don’t be afraid to mix and match your favorite metallic tones.
All hands are on deck for nautical home accents! Navy has been identified as a top home color trend for 2016, which naturally complements the nautical lighting trend. Most popular in homes close to the shore, new fixture designs include nautical twists such as a ship’s frame or classic Cape Cod style. Fixtures sealed with beveled or seeded glass, complete the look.
The industrial trend is gaining traction as more homes incorporate vintage electric design elements. Industrial features pair well with rustic-inspired interiors and help to warm up this popular design trend and maintain an inviting environment. For lighting, fixtures that incorporate steely accents, knob and strap details and mixed metals give nod to the industrial phenomena.
We’re seeing a surge in furniture, textiles, colors, and fixtures that were prevalent in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s – indicating many homeowners’ growing nostalgia reminiscent of “simpler times.” Prismatic glass and fabric shades, brass accents, and traditional forms are making a comeback in lighting design.
Handcrafted elements, oversized fixtures, and industrial accents are all trending in 2016, but what will you incorporate in your home? We’d love to know – let us know in the comments below!
