Interior Design Trends 2017: Edgy and On Point

Toll Brothers’ talented interior design partners HRI Design and Ryan Young Interiors contributed to this story.

Inspiration for your interior design concept is in the forefront of your mind as you walk through the elegance of your luxury home and experience a magnificent grand staircase. Peer through an open and airy floor plan or notice understated embellishments seamlessly drawing your space together. Personal touches such as ornate crown moldings or vast windows that stream in warm sunlight add to the ambiance that makes this space yours. It is always exciting to adorn your home with elegant details and splashes of color that accentuate your style, tastes, and preferences, but where do you start? This year, to help you sift through your lookbook and decide on a design theme, our friends at HRI Design and Ryan Young Interiors reveal their source of inspiration and the hottest interior design trends for 2017.

Experiment with stylized chairs and furniture options to give your space a fresh and sophisticated modern-look. According to HRI Design, there is a delicate balance between being trend forward and utilizing specific design trends in a subtly unexpected way. So, take note of how each individual piece is used as part of the overall design concept in your home. In 2017, designers are noticing the edgy yet strong Scandinavian influence emerge within furniture pieces. This style is resurfacing into the mainstream and is steadily permeating through all spaces. The Scandinavian look is identified as a cleaner and more simplistic style that really accentuates your space in a minimal way while adding touches of character. “‘Collectible’ pieces are still all the rage and will continue to speak to the personality of the homeowner,” HRI Design said.

Designers are creating looks that push the envelope, and as a result, HRI Design is noticing a juxtaposition in color trend. Bold colors like the color combo “black and white” are trending in design concepts and can be paired with warmer wood tones and punchy greens. (HRI Design hints that the Pantone color of the year – ‘Greenery,’ as we’ve seen from our friends at Kohler, will be everywhere by the end of 2017!) Color finishes are also returning to plumbing (hello gorgeous grays and bisque tones!)

A few ways to complete the look with accents is to incorporate unique finishes and glazes to your window to create a focal point. With warmer wood finishes, add in gold and brass hardware to carry the design. For a more impactful look, use stronger color combinations with darker finishes in order to create that “statement” piece.

Texture, hand in hand with the global/ethnic chic look, is also taking over! Textiles, colors, and general trends can originate from any source from any location. A touch of fashion can be seen affecting home design trends in accented pillows, color palette, and much more. Our friends at Ryan Young Interiors point out that as trends emerge we see them develop in the high fashion world first and then are incorporated into the interior design. Kelly Wearstler, for example, who is a well-known American interior designer and entrepreneur, developed a collection with Kravet Fabrics that incorporated high fashion trends and integrated them into a home setting by mixing in fashionable grays, burgundies, and blushes to the interior.

So if you are looking for some simple changes in your luxury home, then add a touch of texture and a splash of color to help you achieve that refreshed look you’ve been aiming for. Inspiration can be found anywhere, you never know when you’ll have that next “eureka” moment.
